Development and Prospects of China's LED Industry

After more than 30 years of development, China's LED industry has initially formed a relatively complete industrial chain. After China's LED industry has gone through the road of buying devices, chips, and epitaxial wafers, it has now achieved independent production of epitaxial wafers and chips. At this stage, there are more than 50,000 people engaged in this industry, more than 20 research institutions, and more than 4,000 companies, including more than 50 upstream companies, more than 1,000 packaging companies, and more than 3,000 downstream application companies. In particular, the establishment of the China Semiconductor Lighting Working Group in 2003 marked the government’s high hopes for the development of LEDs in the lighting field. The entry of LEDs into the general lighting market as a light source has become the core of future industrial development. Driven by the "National Semiconductor Lighting Project", national semiconductor lighting project industrialization bases have been formed in Shanghai, Dalian, Nanchang, Xiamen and Shenzhen. The Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, the Fujian Delta and the northern regions have become the gathering place for the development of China's LED industry.

During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, the country’s main task for the development of the LED industry is to establish a semiconductor lighting technology standard system and intellectual property alliance through the construction of semiconductor lighting characteristic industrial bases and demonstration projects, and to form my country’s emerging semiconductor lighting industry as soon as possible. "Semiconductor lighting project" is included in the "Eleventh Five-Year" science and technology development plan, as a key task. At the same time, according to the development status of my country's own semiconductor lighting, the country has formulated a semiconductor lighting industry development plan and a 2006 technology development roadmap in line with its own development. In China's semiconductor lighting industry development plan, it is planned to reach a single light flux of 300lm by 2008, which can penetrate the field of incandescent lighting.

In the production of LED upstream epitaxial wafers and chips, the United States, Japan, and the European Union still have huge technological advantages, while Taiwan of China has become an important global LED production base. At present, the world has formed a three-legged industrial structure dominated by the United States, Asia, and Europe, and has shown that Japan, the United States, and Germany are the industry leaders. Taiwan and South Korea follow closely, and countries and regions such as China and Malaysia actively follow suit. The echelon distribution of advancement. Although China still has a certain gap in the production technology of LED epitaxial wafers and chips from the international advanced level, the huge domestic application demand brings huge development opportunities to LED downstream manufacturers. Domestic production such as display screens, display devices, LED application products such as landscape lighting lamps have been exported to the United States, the European Union and other countries and regions.
